Statement on the destruction of the chemical weapons possessed by the Russian Federation

Today, the spokesperson of the European External Action Service has made the following statement:

"On 27 September 2017, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) announced the completion of the full destruction of the chemical weapons possessed by the Russian Federation within the extended deadlines.

This accomplishment by the competent Russian authorities, the OPCW and contributing States Parties is an important step towards the achievement of the goals of the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The European Union and its Member States are staunch and consistent supporters of the universalisation and effective implementation of the Convention, including through significant voluntary contributions for the destruction of the chemical weapons possessed by the Russian Federation and other States Parties.

The remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons elsewhere in the world should be eliminated at the earliest possible date, thus bringing the goal of a world free of chemical weapons closer."
